Currency Conversion (Live Exchange Rates)

Unlike the other converters on this site, currency isn't a fixed ratio — exchange rates move constantly based on markets. This tool pulls live reference rates each time you load it, rather than using a rate that goes stale.

The rates come from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, published once each working day and covering around 30 major world currencies including the US Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen and Australian Dollar, alongside the British Pound.

Because these are reference rates rather than live trading rates, they're a good guide for budgeting, travel planning and rough comparisons, but a bank or card provider will apply its own rate and margin (often called a spread) when you actually exchange money or make a card payment abroad — so the number you're charged will usually differ slightly from the figure shown here.

Currencies covered

GBP, USD, EUR, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY, HKD, NZD, SEK, NOK, DKK, PLN, CZK, HUF, RON, BGN, TRY, ILS, INR, IDR, KRW, MXN, MYR, PHP, SGD, THB, ZAR and BRL.

Common currency questions

How often are the exchange rates updated?

The rates refresh from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates each time you load the page — they're updated on ECB business days, typically once around 16:00 CET.

Why is the rate I got charged different from this converter?

This tool shows the ECB reference rate, which doesn't include the margin that banks, card providers and currency exchange desks add on top when you actually convert money — that margin is where they make their money on the transaction.

Is this rate good enough for sending money abroad?

It's a solid reference point for what a "fair" rate looks like, so you can judge whether a money transfer service's quoted rate and fees are reasonable — but always check the actual rate and fees quoted by the specific service you're using.
